Last Week In Phys. Ed. (May 24th – May 27th)

This past week in Phys. Ed. was a quick one.  Lots of different events going on at the school so the week flew by.  On Wednesday we hosted the 2nd annual High 5 Community 5km run.  Despite the rain and cooler temperatures we had 140 runners out.  Everyone had a great time.  A big thanks to all our volunteers that helped make the event a huge success.  Already looking forward to next year!

Unfortunately due to the rain we needed to postpone our divisional track and field meet.  Our grade 4 and 5 students will have a rescheduled meet on May 31st.  The event will take place at John Taylor Collegiate.

During PE classes we did a variety of activities this week.  We spent some time working on our soccer skills, played a little bit of cricket and also did a little bit of yoga.  Friday afternoon was the volunteer tea, so classes had to adjust to a lack of space in the gym…hence the cosmic kids yoga.

Badminton club is also in full swing now.  Students in grade 5 have been busy practicing and will be heading over to Strathmillan School in a couple of weeks for our badminton tournament.  Please refer to the calendar outside the gym for practice times.

Finally, just a friendly reminder that if you and your child plan on participating in the Manitoba Marathon the deadline to sign up as a part of our school group is May 31st.  Please see M. Vermeylen if you have more questions.

Last Week In Phys. Ed. (May 15th – May 20th)

Last week in Phys. Ed. was kind of a mixed bag here at ÉRB.  Students in grades 4 and 5 have been working their way through some of the track and field events that they will be participating in at our divisional meet next week (May 26th).  They also played a bit of frisknock and a few other low organized games.

Students in Kindergarten – Grade 3 have continued to work on soccer skills.  We played a few days of Long Base, a modified version of soccer baseball as well as some mini soccer baseball games.

This past week also marked the start of our badminton club.  Students in grade 5 will be practicing a few times a week and will have the chance to take part in a tournament in early June.  Please refer to the calendar outside the gym for dates and times.  If you have any questions you can contact M. Koester at the school.

Lastly we’ve been spending some time outdoors.  With the nice weather it’s been hard to stay inside.  We will continue to have some classes outside, so don’t forget to put on sunscreen in the morning.  Hats and/or sunglasses are also a bonus.

Last Week In Phys. Ed. (June 1st – June 5th)

This past week has been a fun one!  The weather definitely cooperated.  Our grade 3-5 students have been doing some preparation for our geocaching unit.  We’ve spent some time on the iPads learning more about geocaching:

  • What is Geocaching?
  • How do you play it?
  • What are the rules?
  • What does C.I.T.O. stand for?

Students have also spent some time with the GPS units to familiarize themselves with them.  Next week M. Koester and I will be hiding caches around our school yard and the students will get a chance to put their geocaching skills to the test.  If you would like to try out geocaching at home a great place to start is the geocaching website: http://www.geocaching.com.  It’s free to join and there’s a free app for iPhone and Android devices.

Our K-2 students have been playing a variety of low organized games.  We’ve continued to work on kicking skills, however, we have also added in some other skills at the same time.  We’ve been playing some dodgeball games and some tag games.

Our grade 5 badminton team is playing today in our annual Stevenson, Strathmillan, Browning badminton tournament at Strathmillan School.  12 students will have the opportunity to show off what they’ve learned throughout the month of May during badminton club.  Best of luck to all participants!

Last Week In Phys. Ed. (x2) (May 11th – May 22nd)

The past two weeks have been very busy here at ÉRB.  Lots of different things going on.  We have been working on soccer/kicking during PE classes.  Students have been playing 4 Corner Soccer, Sasquatch Soccer, and a variety of other soccer related games.  We will continue to work on our soccer skills in the upcoming week.

We also hosted the 1st Annual High 5 Community 5km Fun Run.  It was a huge success!  We had 125 participants running and walking our 2.5km and 5km course.  We also raised approximately $300.00 to donate to Kidsport Manitoba.  We couldn’t have asked for a better evening for a run.  Thanks to everyone that participated or volunteered!  Hope to see you out again next year.  You can still visit our race website at highfiverun.wordpress.com for info about this year’s race.

Our badminton and marathon clubs have also been very active.  Our running group has been meeting twice a week, and is well into our training to participate in the Super Run held on June 21st at the University of Manitoba.  Our badminton players have been busy working on their skills in preparation for our badminton tournament which is held at Strathmillan School on June 5th.  Best of luck to all our participants.

Last Week In Phys. Ed. (Apr. 6th – Apr. 10th)

A great first week back after spring break.  We picked up right where we left off prior to the break with striking.  Students had a chance to play a few different striking games.  We tried out a new game called Long Base, played some Cricket and also played Bat-a-rama.  Striking will continue next week as we slowly transition into more of the racquet sports (badminton, tennis).

Last week was also the first week of grade 4/5 badminton club.  This club will meet twice a week for the months of April and May.  All students in grade 4 and 5 are welcome to come out regardless of badminton skill level.  At the end of the club 12 students will be chosen to participate in the badminton tournament held on June 5th @ Strathmillan School.

Badminton Season Wrap Up

Congratulations to all of ÉRB’s badminton club participants!  You all have shown a great deal of growth in your skills and knowledge of the game.  Hope that you enjoyed your time!  Yesterday 12 selected students had the opportunity to participate in our annual Strathmillan/Stevenson/Robert Browning badminton tournament.  All participants played very well and were great sports.  You’ve done École Robert Browning proud.  IMG_0741 IMG_0739 IMG_0745 IMG_0744 IMG_0750 IMG_0749 IMG_0748 IMG_0747 IMG_0752 IMG_0754

Spring Extra Curricular Activities Coming Soon

Believe it or not spring is here!  That means the start of our spring season of extra curricular activities.  Students/Parents that are interested in any of the activities should stay tuned for more information following our Spring Break.

Starting up as soon as we get back from the break will be Speed Stacking Time Trials.  All students at École Robert Browning will have the opportunity to be timed in the 3-6-3 as well as The Cycle stack.  Those students with the fastest times in the school will have the opportunity to represent us at the annual SJAEYAA Speed Stacking Tournament held on April 23rd.

Also starting in April will be our Grade 5 Badminton Club.  Badminton club will run twice a week, and will provide the students with a deeper understanding of the skills, strategies and techniques that make up the game of badminton.  All students in grade 5 are welcome to come out and participate, regardless of skill level.  Practices will be held on Wednesday mornings starting at 8:15am.  More info will follow soon.

Finally, our very popular Marathon Club will also be starting up in April.  Students will be running twice a week (Tuesdays/Thursdays) in the morning.  The goal of our club is to participate in the Great West Life 2.6 Mile Super Run as part of the Manitoba Marathon on June 15th.  More info coming soon!
