Last Week In PE (April 16th-27th)

Another two for one deal!  April has turned out to be a busy month here at ÉRB.  We’ve had quite a bit on the go over the past few weeks.  We’ve been working on striking games in class (hockey, ringette, bopper hockey).  Students have been doing some skill development as well and mini games.  We also had a guest appearance from Tennis Manitoba.  They came by last week to work on some tennis skills with our students.  Everyone had a great time!

A select group of students had the opportunity to present Circus Arts at the board office meeting last Tuesday and they also had the opportunity to act as teachers/presenters at the Physical Literacy Training Day Workshop last Friday.  This group did a fantastic job!  Way to go everyone!

We participated in the divisional Speed Stacking competition on the 18th.  Our school put in a great effort.  Congrats to Mike M. for finishing 4th in the boys’ Cycle Stack category!

In the coming weeks we are going to be doing some soccer/kicking activites during PE class.  M. Koester and I are also planning a “breakout PE” class using the escape boxes that we’ve borrowed from the division.  Stay tuned for more details.   Hope everyone has an awesome week!

Last Week In Phys. Ed. (Dec. 12th-16th)

This week was kind of a mixed bag.  We did some circus activities, a bit of skipping, some holiday games and celebrated the new Star Wars movie by playing a Star Wars themed game.  Everyone is running pretty high in the anticipation of the holiday break.  We’ve been trying to keep as active and as busy as possible during our PE classes.  Next week we will do more of the same.

Intramurals have wrapped up for the year.  Thanks to everyone that came out and played soccer.  Our next intramural activity will start up in January.  One other special activity planned for the month of December is our teachers vs students team handball game.  We will be playing on Thursday, Dec. 22nd in the afternoon.  Looking forward to it!

Last Week In Phys. Ed. (Nov. 21st-25th)

A very scattered week this week.  A few different PD days, plus our conferences day made for a very short week of actual teaching time. We continued to work on our soccer skills this week, however, we tried a bit of a different approach to our teaching.  M. Koester and I went to a PD session on Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU).  It’s a teaching model that stresses playing the game first (or a form of the game), then asking the right questions to create confident and competent players that both understand the game and are able to play the game.  We will continue to try this approach to our instruction throughout the school year.

Next week we are going to work on a variety of skills including skipping, speed stacking and snowshoeing (if we actually get some snow).

Last Week In Phys. Ed. (Nov. 14th-18th)

Lots of soccer and kicking this week in PE classes.  Students have been working a perfecting their soccer skills (dribbling, passing and shooting) during the course of the week.  We’ve also had the chance to play a few different soccer games.  Some of our games included 4 Corner Soccer, Super Soccer as well as the regular soccer.  We will continue to work on soccer related skills and activities next week as well.

Next week is also our big school fundraiser week.  We will be hosting our Dance-A-Thon on Tuesday afternoon.  This year the theme is to come dressed as your favourite story book character.  Cannot wait to see all the costumes!

Last Week In Phys. Ed. (Nov. 7th-11th)

A very short week this week, only 3 days.  Worked a bit more on target games during PE classes.  Played some Super Bowling, Individual Pinguard and a little bit of curling.  Both of our team handball teams played their second games of the season.  The skill level and understanding of the game has sure increased quickly.  Next week is a bye week for both teams.  Lastly we’ve been rolling along with our indoor soccer intramurals.  The École Robert Browning Premier League (ERBPL) has been a huge hit, especially with the grade 3 students.  After the round robin portion of the season (early December), the 1st place team in each grade will face off against the teachers team.

Last Week In Phys. Ed. (May 15th – May 20th)

Last week in Phys. Ed. was kind of a mixed bag here at ÉRB.  Students in grades 4 and 5 have been working their way through some of the track and field events that they will be participating in at our divisional meet next week (May 26th).  They also played a bit of frisknock and a few other low organized games.

Students in Kindergarten – Grade 3 have continued to work on soccer skills.  We played a few days of Long Base, a modified version of soccer baseball as well as some mini soccer baseball games.

This past week also marked the start of our badminton club.  Students in grade 5 will be practicing a few times a week and will have the chance to take part in a tournament in early June.  Please refer to the calendar outside the gym for dates and times.  If you have any questions you can contact M. Koester at the school.

Lastly we’ve been spending some time outdoors.  With the nice weather it’s been hard to stay inside.  We will continue to have some classes outside, so don’t forget to put on sunscreen in the morning.  Hats and/or sunglasses are also a bonus.

Last Week In Phys. Ed. (May 9th – May 13th)

Another great week in Physical Education at ÉRB.  This week we played some miniature golf, four corner soccer, super soccer and did a little bit of dodgeball as well.  This week wraps up our dodgeball intramural season.  The grade 3 and grade 4 winners took on the teachers team during Thursday and Friday lunch hour.  The grade 5 winners will play Monday.  Dodgeball is the last intramural activity this year.

Students that are interested in playing badminton can stay tuned for more information.  Badminton club will be starting up over the lunch hours in the coming weeks.  Students will have the chance to improve their skills and learn more about the game of badminton.  A select group of participants will also have a chance to participate in our badminton tournament held in early June.

On Thursday our grade 5 volleyball club participated in one of the four SJAEYAA divisional volleyball tournaments.  We spent the morning at College Sturgeon Heights Collegiate with students from Bannatyne, Athlone and Heritage schools.  All participants had a great time and are already looking forward to continuing their volleyball journey in grade 6.  Thanks to the staff and students of CSHC for hosting!

This weekend marks the registration deadline for the High 5 Community 5km run.  If you are still interested in participating we’d love to have you out.  The run is May 25th at 4:30pm.  For more information and to register to race or volunteer please visit highfiverun.wordpress.com

Last Week In Phys. Ed. (May 2nd-6th)

A little bit of soccer, some time outdoors and some Star Wars themed activities rounded out this past week in Phys. Ed.  May and June will be a mixed bag of activities as we make our way towards the end of the school year.  Students had the opportunity to work on some soccer related skills this past week and played a few versions of soccer as a large group.  Some groups had the opportunity to play outdoors, which was a really nice treat for early in May.  We also marked “May the 4th” by having groups participate in a Jedi training academy.  Students worked on their balance, concentration, agility and a few other Jedi-like skills.

Next week we will continue in the same direction.  On Thursday our grade 5 volleyball club participants will be attending a divisional volleyball tournament at College Sturgeon Heights Collegiate.  Best of luck to you all.  Our fingers are crossed that the nice weather continues to roll along as we make our way into mid May.

Last Week In Phys. Ed. (Apr.25th – Apr. 29th)

Lots of fitness testing this week in PE class.  Students took part in their final week of fitness tests this year.  We tested ourselves 3 times this year with the hopes of improving our scores each time.  The students all did a fantastic job, and were really motivated, even on a Friday.  Great work everyone!  The tests that we did this year were: the 15m pacer test (beep test), a timed run (various times depending on grade level) and the 100 second challenge (how many exercises can you do in 100 secs).

As the weather starts to improve we will start to move some of our classes outdoors.  We will be continuing a bit more with golfing and will also be adding in some soccer skills, games and activities.  M. Koester and I hope to maybe even make our own golf course in the school yard at some point.

As an added bonus this week we had the divisional juggling kit at our school.  Students spent a few minutes each class working on plate spinning, diabolos and juggling balls, rings and clubs.  Next year we will have our own juggling equipment as part of our Circus Infused PE program.  Can’t wait!

Don’t forget, the High 5 Run is not that far away.  Registration for the race closes May 15th!  Visit highfiverun.wordpress.com for more info.

Last Week In Phys. Ed. (May 25th – May 29th)

This past week in Phys. Ed. we had a special event for all of our Grade 4 and 5 students.  Our divisional track and field day was held on May 26th, and it couldn’t have been a nicer day.  Students had the opportunity to participate in a variety of track and field events including: 100m, 200m, 30m hurdles, long jump, disc throw, ball throw and many others.  Congratulations to all participants, hopefully we’ve made you track and field fans for life!

In regular PE time we took a break from soccer and kicking and spent some time playing low organized games to really get us moving.  As we move into June and the weather improves we will be heading outdoors to do some geocaching along with some other outdoor activities.  Coming up soon, on June 19th, we will having our tabloid day.  This is a very popular event when students have the entire afternoon to test their skills at stations created by the grade 5 students at ÉRB.
